Happy Reformation Day! Five hundred years ago today, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of the church in Wittenberg, setting into motion a reformation and a revolution that will never end.
The Protestant Reformation would eventually come to be defined by its five distinctive points, or “solas”: short phrases that guide and underlay the beliefs of the Protestant Church. But as important as they are, sometimes they can be difficult to understand.
But while I was studying the Solas, I noticed something interesting: each and every one of them can be explained through one of the rulers of Middle-Earth that the Hobbits meet during the events of Lord of the Rings.
So, in celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, today we’re releasing a day-long miniseries called Sola Frodo: The Kings of Middle-Earth and the Doctrines of Grace. You’ll see five more short posts today:
- The Faithlessness of Denethor (Sola Fide)
- The Ruin of Théoden (Sola Scriptura)
- The Boast of Aragorn (Solus Christus)
- The Gift of Galadriel (Sola Gratia)
- The Waste of the Witch-King (Soli Deo Gloria)
We hope you enjoy. Keep your eye out on Facebook or here for the first post, later this morning. At dawn, look to the East.
