House of Cards: Season 5 (Netflix) – When you think about Netflix becoming the streaming provider of great and interesting content, you have to give credit to House of Cards‘ success for really paving the way for all the original content we get. House of Cards is incredibly deserving as well. As the fifth season is upon us, we can look back at the show that has made the backroom dealings of Washington, DC insanely interesting. It does help that it is anchored by two incredibly compelling, albeit dastardly, leads. Prepare for another season of chaos from the Underwood’s or catch up with previous seasons if you’ve been meaning to catch that show that all your friends will be talking about at the end of the month.

I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story (Amazon Prime) – You may not know Caroll Spinney’s name, but you definitely know the characters he has portrayed on television for nearly 50 years: Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. This film is poignant and endearing for many reasons. It really gets inside Spinney’s head, and the viewer discovers just where those two diametrically opposed characters originated in his mind. It’s also a fascinating look behind the scenes at Sesame Street, really showing just how much effort it takes to create those characters. Finally, the interviews are touching, particularly with legendary Muppeteer Jerry Nelson (performer of Count von Count, Floyd Pepper and Robin the Frog, among others), who passed away before the film was released. And if you don’t tear up when Big Bird performs “It’s Not Easy Being Green” at Jim Henson’s memorial service, you need your heart examined.
